The TheraPad infrared heating pad is unlike any heating pad in the past. Totally different from other heating pads on the market that use ordinary heat elements with extreme heat that only warms the surface of the skin and scarcely penetrates millimeters (skin) deep.

HOW THE THERAPAD PRODUCES PAIN RELIEF

Increases the extensibility of collagen tissues

•  Tissues heated to 45° C (113°F) and then stretched exhibit a non-elastic residual elongation of about 0.5 - 0.9% that persists after the stretch is removed which does not occur in these same tissues when stretched at normal tissue temperatures. Thus 20 stretching sessions can produce a 10 - 18% increase in length in tissues heated and stretched.

•  This effect would be especially valuable in working with ligaments, joint capsules, tendons, fasciae, and synovium that have become scarred, thickened or contracted.

•  Such stretching at 45° C (113°F) caused much less weakening in stretched tissues for a given elongation than a similar elongation produces at normal tissue temperatures.

•  The experiments cited clearly showed that low-force stretching can produce significant residual elongation when heat is applied together with stretching or range-of-motion exercises, which is also safer than stretching tissues at normal tissue temperatures.

•  This safer stretching effect is crucial in properly training competitive athletes so as to minimize their "down" time from injuries.

•  Pain may be relieved via the reduction of attendant or secondary muscle spasms.

•  Pain is also at times related to ischemia due to tension or spasm which can be improved by the hyperemia that heat-induced vasodilation produces, thus breaking the feedback loop, in which the ischemia leads to further spasm and then more pain.

•  Heat has been shown to reduce pain sensation by direct action on both free-nerve endings in tissues and on peripheral nerves. In one dental study, repeated heat applications led finally to abolishment of the whole nerve response responsible for pain arising from dental pulp.

•  Heat may both lead to increased endorphin production and a shutting down of the so-called "spinal gate" of Melzack and Wall, each of which can reduce pain.

Our bodies radiate and absorb infrared energy through the skin at 3 - 50 microns with a concentration of energy output at 9.4 microns. The IR radiation of TheraPad emits about one-third of its output in the MIR bandwidth from 2 - 5.6 microns.

For deeper penetration, with the balance of output in the FIR band, from 5.6 - 25 microns with that part of the output spread evenly around the 9.4-micron pivot point of peak human output. This distribution maximizes the higher penetration of the middle-band waves and combines them with the long waves that produce a resonant absorption amplification of healthy tissue output.

The anatomical and physiological implication of TheraPAD IR products and the application of IR for relief of pain is founded on the properties and critical functions performed by the body's blood supply and circulatory system.

The principal of Homeostasis refers to the body's natural reaction to maintain, or attempt to maintain, a stable internal environment through the body's coordinated responses of the organ systems that automatically compensate for environmental changes.

Exposure of the body to IR radiant energy creates an environmental change (absorption of energy and conversion to heat), which accelerates the body's homeostatic response. These natural responses include, among other things, blood flow stimulation (stimulation of peripheral and central thermoreceptors), circulation enhancement (vasodilation and increased permeability of blood vessels) and oxygenation supply and toxic removal from muscle tissue.

The body's homeostatic response to IR radiation may be in any or all of the following forms of change: in body temperature, blood pressure, chemical compositions (enzymes, blood sugar levels, hormones, etc.) and organ function (e.g. enhanced response by the excretory organs including the kidneys, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract).

The most direct homeostatic response to TheraPAD IR radiation is the body's homeostasis of body temperature regulation (referred to as homeothermic response).

The human body, regardless of wide fluctuations in environmental temperature, can maintain a constant core temperature near 37°C (98.6°F); the desired normal range for internal body temperature. Body temperature is maintained by mechanisms that attempt to keep heat production and heat loss in balance. In response to an increase in blood temperature, the body's peripheral thermoreceptors located in the skin and mucous membranes stimulates the body's heat losing centers which respond through vasodilation, perspiration and decreased metabolism to lower the body temperature.

Vasodilation , which is an increase in the diameter of the blood vessels, results in increased permeability allowing substances (oxygen supply and toxic removal) to be passed more easily.

Through an accelerated and enhanced circulatory response the body naturally fights pain in a fundamental manner: by 2000 Wadsworth Suite B-121 ing the cause of the pain (inflammation, injury to nerve fiber or irritation caused by the release of toxic chemicals from microorganisms).

Surface Temperature

The TheraPad can generate heat without direct luminescence on the dermas thus avoiding issues of dehydration or side effects such as of blistering and so on. Further, TheraPad devices can generate greater heat at lower levels than can conventional heating pads while maintaining an overall lower surface temperature (50° F - 62° F) lower than the General Electric Solaray heating pad).

Also noted that because of the non-dehydration feature of its element, the TheraPad pad does not create any discoloration or dryness of the skin surface such as occurs from the use of electric heating pads on the market today.

There were no adverse effects reported by any of the patients involved in the test except in one instance, where one patient reported that his skin became "itchy". After careful and thorough examination, this reported condition proved to be resultant of a condition not relative to the pad.
